Matched betting is a betting strategy that involves placing bets on all possible outcomes of a sporting event to ensure a profit regardless of the outcome. The key to this strategy is to use free bets, bonuses, and promotions offered by bookmakers to place both back and lay bets. A “back bet” is a traditional bet placed on a specific outcome to happen, while a “lay bet” is a bet placed against a specific outcome happening. Some matched betting can also include a combination of two “back bets”.

Consider a basketball game between Team A and Team B. A bookmaker is offering odds of 1.9 (decimal odds) for Team A to win, and the bettor places a back bet on Team A to win with a promotion to be paid a $5 bonus for every 3 pointer scored by a specific player. The bettor also places a lay bet at 2 against Team A winning on a betting exchange, such as Betfair. The bettor makes a qualifying loss of 5-10% to be involved in the opportunity but if enough 3 pointers are scored the bettor can make a profit by converting the bonuses acquired into guaranteed cash using a simple mathematical method. By doing so, the bettor ensures a profit, regardless of which team wins the game.

Let’s say a horse racing event is taking place, and a bookmaker is offering odds of 2.0 (decimal odds) for a specific horse to win. The bettor places a “back bet” on the horse to win with a promotion to be paid a $50 bonus if the horse comes 2nd or 3rd. The bettor also places a lay bet against the horse winning on a betting exchange. The bettor makes a qualifying loss of 5-10% to be involved in the opportunity but if the horse comes 2nd or 3rd the bettor can make a profit by converting the bonuses acquired into guaranteed cash using a simple mathematical method. By doing so, the bettor ensures a profit, regardless of which team wins the game.

It’s important to note that matched betting can be a complex strategy, and bettors should thoroughly understand the concepts and risks involved before attempting it. Additionally, some bookmakers may restrict or ban accounts of bettors who engage in matched betting.
